FOREWORD BY THE CHAIRPERSON

On behalf of the Board of the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI), it is my pleasure to present the Annual Performance Plan for the 2025/26 financial year to the Department of Electricity Energy (DEE) as the primary shareholder, and all stakeholders, including the public. The Annual Performance Plan encapsulates the operational endeavours that the Institute will undertake from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. As the inaugural year of the NRWDI five-year strategic plan for 2025-2030, the Institute engaged in a process of reimagining and redefining its purpose to align with the priorities set by the 7th Administration under the Government of National Unity (GNU). Most importantly, this exercise focused on how it can better serve its stakeholders and contribute to South Africa through the effective implementation of its mandate.
With the emergence of innovative technologies in energy generation in South Africa, particularly the nuclear energy mix, the NRWDI requires a comprehensive strategy that emphasizes operational excellence, technological innovation, and stringent regulatory compliance in the management of radioactive waste disposal. This requires the Institute to be initiative-taking in developing solutions for the waste that will be generated by harnessing its expertise and resources to facilitate sustainable growth within the nuclear sector.
