Job Description

NRWDI is looking for three graduates, to be trained within compliance management division. The internship program will focus on the Development, maintenance, and compliance assessment of the nuclear installation license, including management systems as required by NNR document RD 0034.

Job Description

The Radiation Protection Specialist role is to provide radiation protection program, services, and support to NRWDI.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Develop, implement and maintain a Radiation Protection Program for NRWDI.
  • Ensure that the necessary infrastructure, systems and processes are established to execute and maintain the RP Program.
  • Establish a medical surveillance programme for occupationally exposed workers, including bioassay monitoring.
  • Establish a health register for occupationally exposed workers.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a Radiation Protection Program for NRWDI.
  • Ensure that the necessary infrastructure, systems and processes are established to execute and maintain the RP Program.
  • Establish a medical surveillance programme for occupationally exposed workers, including bioassay monitoring.
  • Establish a health register for occupationally exposed workers.
  • Establish a radiological personnel dosimetry program and provide technical guidance and assistance to implement and maintain the program.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a radiological environmental monitoring programme for Vaalputs, including setting of and compliance with allowable discharge quantities for releases of gaseous and liquid radioactive effluents.
  • Develop, implement and maintain procedures, processes and infrastructure for radiological environmental monitoring during / after a radiological emergency.
  • Maintain a system of records for all Radiation Protection Program documents, activities and monitoring results.
  • Appoint QA approved maintenance and a calibration service for installed and portable radiological surveillance instruments.
  • Appoint QA approved laboratories for radiological analytical services.
  • Manage the RP program.
  • Conduct radiological safety assessments.
  • Provide RP support during emergencies and emergency exercises.
  • Advise NRWDI staff and management on all aspects relating to radiological hazards and risks.
  • Assess and record personnel and public doses and dose records.
  • Approve liquid and gaseous radioactive effluent programs.
  • Evaluate and report on liquid and gaseous effluent releases.
  • Evaluate the radiological impact of non-compliances with nuclear license conditions.
  • Manage nuclear occurrences.
  • Check/accept radiological reports.
  • Approve work procedures and instructions for radiation work.
  • Assess and control radiological hazards in the workplace.
  • Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment is available for radiological tasks.

  • Develop and implement RP training programs.
  • Provide technical input relating to radiation protection in licensing documentation.
  • Conduct or assist in investigations involving radioactive material.
  • Review and accept procedures and assessments covering the elements and requirements of the RP programme.
  • Oversee and advise on safety assessments, design surveys and assessment methodologies to identify and quantify radiation hazards pertaining to workforce, visitors and the public as well as waste disposal operations.
  • Provide specialist RP support for emergency planning, emergency exercises and emergencies.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and support for NRWDI staff during regulatory audits.
  • Provide support in Nuclear Projects.
  • Carry out internal nuclear license and management system audits.
  • Stop-start activities where non-compliance with license, statutory and / or regulatory requirements are detected which can compromise the nuclear authorization for NRWDI, which can endanger lives of personnel or compromise the environment.
  • Intervene when any work or process contravenes nuclear installation license conditions.
  • Work with the Appointed Medical Practitioner to ensure compliance to the medical surveillance program and a health register for occupationally exposed workers.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

Skills:

  • Experience as RPS in nuclear installation.
    Auditing skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, MS Projects).
    Writing skills (reports, procedures, work instructions, etc.)

Job Description

The Nuclear Safety Engineer role is responsible for conducting safety assessments of radioactive waste disposal facilities and support licensing projects (designs and modifications) in accordance with nuclear safety, radiation protection principles, regulatory practices, and criteria in order to obtain regulatory approval and ensure worker health and safety, as well as public and environmental protection.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Leadership oversight through active participation at EXCO and MANCO.
  • Apply modelling techniques, code applications, validations, deterministic safety assessment techniques for radiological and chemical facilities for review and maintenance of the safety case.
  • Conduct and review safety assessments to ensure management Control Systems, including procedures to manage the plant/equipment and human interface, are established to ensure safety.
  • Provide input to safety case in areas of expertise.
  • Identify the need for any remedial action or additional Technical/Safety justifications and agree with Operations department on them.
  • Review processes, systems, and activities in nuclear/non-nuclear facilities, performing appropriate hazard and accident analysis, and ensuring the associated safety equipment is designed to protect the health and safety of the public and workers.
  • Perform radiological and toxicological consequence analysis.
  • Assist in generation of accident analysis and engineering data.
    Conduct safety assessments to improve facility design and layout for safety.
  • Utilization of probabilistic and deterministic safety assessment techniques, primarily developed for nuclear reactors, in non-reactor nuclear and chemical facilities, using a tailored approach as applicable to nuclear applications.
  • Give recommendations to justify design changes for safety goals.
    Utilize HAZOP, FMEA, Functional Analysis, SSC safety classification, and other safety evaluation methods.
  • Publish research, present at conferences and workshops, and develop industry contacts and relationships.
  • Meet with internal and external stakeholders and their representatives as needed.
  • Interface with stakeholder in nuclear safety reviews and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements.
  • Implement a process that will ensure project safety throughout its life cycle, from design to decommissioning.
  • Assisting with various projects example the CISF so the research and development division.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of SHEQ systems for NRWDI to the point where processes and requirements can be effectively integrated into project and operation management.
  • Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and developments to ensure the most cost-effective program.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

Skills:

  • Experience in nuclear design and safety analysis of nuclear applications.
  • Design basis accident dose analysis experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of regulatory processes, guidance, and requirements is a plus.
  • Good technical writing skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Good time management skills and an ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks.
  • Good presentation skills.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and understanding of corporate governance principles applicable within South African state-owned entities.
