Minimum years relevant experience
5 years’ experience as a Radiation Protection Specialist in radiation protection services at an authorized nuclear installation facility/organization.

Job Description
The Radiation Protection Specialist role is to provide radiation protection program, services, and support to NRWDI.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Develop, implement and maintain a Radiation Protection Program for NRWDI.
- Ensure that the necessary infrastructure, systems and processes are established to execute and maintain the RP Program.
- Establish a medical surveillance programme for occupationally exposed workers, including bioassay monitoring.
- Establish a health register for occupationally exposed workers.
- Develop, implement and maintain a Radiation Protection Program for NRWDI.
- Ensure that the necessary infrastructure, systems and processes are established to execute and maintain the RP Program.
- Establish a medical surveillance programme for occupationally exposed workers, including bioassay monitoring.
- Establish a health register for occupationally exposed workers.
- Establish a radiological personnel dosimetry program and provide technical guidance and assistance to implement and maintain the program.
- Develop, implement and maintain a radiological environmental monitoring programme for Vaalputs, including setting of and compliance with allowable discharge quantities for releases of gaseous and liquid radioactive effluents.
- Develop, implement and maintain procedures, processes and infrastructure for radiological environmental monitoring during / after a radiological emergency.
- Maintain a system of records for all Radiation Protection Program documents, activities and monitoring results.
- Appoint QA approved maintenance and a calibration service for installed and portable radiological surveillance instruments.
- Appoint QA approved laboratories for radiological analytical services.
- Manage the RP program.
- Conduct radiological safety assessments.
- Provide RP support during emergencies and emergency exercises.
- Advise NRWDI staff and management on all aspects relating to radiological hazards and risks.
- Assess and record personnel and public doses and dose records.
- Approve liquid and gaseous radioactive effluent programs.
- Evaluate and report on liquid and gaseous effluent releases.
- Evaluate the radiological impact of non-compliances with nuclear license conditions.
- Manage nuclear occurrences.
- Check/accept radiological reports.
- Approve work procedures and instructions for radiation work.
- Assess and control radiological hazards in the workplace.
- Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment is available for radiological tasks.
- Ensure appropriate radiological monitoring and measuring devices are available in the workplace.
- Assess ventilation performance in controlled radiological areas.
- Develop and implement RP training programs.
- Provide technical input relating to radiation protection in licensing documentation.
- Conduct or assist in investigations involving radioactive material.
- Review and accept procedures and assessments covering the elements and requirements of the RP programme.
- Oversee and advise on safety assessments, design surveys and assessment methodologies to identify and quantify radiation hazards pertaining to workforce, visitors and the public as well as waste disposal operations.
- Provide specialist RP support for emergency planning, emergency exercises and emergencies.
- Provide leadership, guidance and support for NRWDI staff during regulatory audits.
- Provide support in Nuclear Projects.
- Carry out internal nuclear license and management system audits.
- Stop-start activities where non-compliance with license, statutory and / or regulatory requirements are detected which can compromise the nuclear authorization for NRWDI, which can endanger lives of personnel or compromise the environment.
- Intervene when any work or process contravenes nuclear installation license conditions.
- Work with the Appointed Medical Practitioner to ensure compliance to the medical surveillance program and a health register for occupationally exposed workers.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
Skills:
- Experience as RPS in nuclear installation.
Auditing skills. - Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, MS Projects).
Writing skills (reports, procedures, work instructions, etc.) - Communication skills including meeting facilitation and presentations.
- Ability to cope with stress, pressure, deadlines and to handle setbacks.
- Ability to research, analyze and prepare information.
- Proactive self-starter, able to decide and initiate action.
