Job Description

The Nuclear Safety Engineer role is responsible for conducting safety assessments of radioactive waste disposal facilities and support licensing projects (designs and modifications) in accordance with nuclear safety, radiation protection principles, regulatory practices, and criteria in order to obtain regulatory approval and ensure worker health and safety, as well as public and environmental protection.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Leadership oversight through active participation at EXCO and MANCO.
  • Apply modelling techniques, code applications, validations, deterministic safety assessment techniques for radiological and chemical facilities for review and maintenance of the safety case.
  • Conduct and review safety assessments to ensure management Control Systems, including procedures to manage the plant/equipment and human interface, are established to ensure safety.
  • Provide input to safety case in areas of expertise.
  • Identify the need for any remedial action or additional Technical/Safety justifications and agree with Operations department on them.
  • Review processes, systems, and activities in nuclear/non-nuclear facilities, performing appropriate hazard and accident analysis, and ensuring the associated safety equipment is designed to protect the health and safety of the public and workers.
  • Perform radiological and toxicological consequence analysis.
  • Assist in generation of accident analysis and engineering data.
    Conduct safety assessments to improve facility design and layout for safety.
  • Utilization of probabilistic and deterministic safety assessment techniques, primarily developed for nuclear reactors, in non-reactor nuclear and chemical facilities, using a tailored approach as applicable to nuclear applications.
  • Give recommendations to justify design changes for safety goals.
    Utilize HAZOP, FMEA, Functional Analysis, SSC safety classification, and other safety evaluation methods.
  • Publish research, present at conferences and workshops, and develop industry contacts and relationships.
  • Meet with internal and external stakeholders and their representatives as needed.
  • Interface with stakeholder in nuclear safety reviews and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements.
  • Implement a process that will ensure project safety throughout its life cycle, from design to decommissioning.
  • Assisting with various projects example the CISF so the research and development division.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of SHEQ systems for NRWDI to the point where processes and requirements can be effectively integrated into project and operation management.
  • Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and developments to ensure the most cost-effective program.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

Skills:

  • Experience in nuclear design and safety analysis of nuclear applications.
  • Design basis accident dose analysis experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of regulatory processes, guidance, and requirements is a plus.
  • Good technical writing skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Good time management skills and an ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks.
  • Good presentation skills.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and understanding of corporate governance principles applicable within South African state-owned entities.
  • Sound understanding of the preparation of the relevant categories of Safety documentation for a nuclear installation.
  • Safety Strategy supporting techniques
    Categorization of safety assessment and determination of nuclear safety significance.
  • Safety Assessment techniques
    Basic knowledge of nuclear power systems and applications.
  • Knowledge of historical, operating, and nuclear facilities.
